Question:

Do I have a virus or spyware problem?

My nephew downloaded something from torrent.to, and now my computer is not working properly. It gave me 32 viruses, which were repaired by my norton anti-virus, but now I have this program called "Windows XP Anti-spyware 2008". I cant get rid of it and it is causing my comp to run slow and my scripts are not working on my page. Also, when I try to click any links, I get re-directed to different site (ie. ringtones, etc). I have done a full system norton scan and its not finding anything, yet Windows XP Anti-spyware 2008 program keeps running and popping up? Any help would be greatly appriciated!

  1. Firstly, antivirus programs will NOT remove these as they are malicious codecs, although they may find reference to them and remove it but upon rebooting it's back again

    RogueRemover:

    http://www.download.com/RogueRemover/300...

Download, install, update, scan and follow on screen prompts.

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Removes Antivirus:

    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Ant...

Download, install, update and select Full Scan.

Remove all infections that it finds after scan.

    Spybot S&D:

    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl...

Download, install, update and Immunize, then click 'Check for problems' then when complete select all and then 'Fix Checked'

Spyware Doctor Free Basic Edition - Realtime monitoring:

    http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_inst...

Its free with Google pack, untick all boxes except Spyware Doctor. Download install, update and run.

    VundoFix:

    http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/gl...

Disconnect your computer from the internet

    Run vundo

    Restart your computer

Run the tool again to ensure no traces are left.

If your desktop has changed or icons are missing use:

    Wallpaper Hijacker Removal Tool:

Note: You should hit all "Repair" buttons even though it may not say "Found!" This will fix a wallpaper hijack everytime if all repair buttons are pressed.

  2. Lisa

I promise you the two posters before me are not even close to being correct with their answers . THE ONLY Microsoft backed fixed for Antivirus xp 2008 is Combo fix

make sure you turn off system restore first and run this

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix...

let it complete or it will change your time to military time ( very easy to correct )
