these are the symptoms i'm having

-tired

-urinating a lot

-drinking a lot

-always hungry

-and very moody

Do you think I might have diabetes?

I also get very bad migraines but I don't know if that has anything to do with diabetes. But I also don't get my period regularly and I've had my period for 6 years now, I would think that I would be regular by now.

  1. You MIGHT.

But you could have a number of other problems -- or none at all.

The ONLY way to diagnose diabetes is using a test called A1C. This is a very quick and easy blood test that a doctor can do in his office in 5-10 minutes IF he has the proper equipment.

A NORMAL A1C test reading is between 5 and 6.  if your reading is NORMAL then you probably do NOT have diabetes.

IF the A1C reading is greater than 7, then you need a second test, called Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT).

The GTT is more complicated, takes longer (3-4 hours) and can be a bit painful.  But it is DEFINITIVE.  If the GTT says that you have diabetes, then you have it, and you need to start treatments immediately.

If the A1C is HIGH but the GTT is negative, the you are probably hyperglycemic.  Stop eating sugars (colas, sports drinks, energy drinks, cookies, ice cream, cakes, candy). Cut back on starches like breads and crackers and pastas, rice, and potatoes (especially french fries).

Eat more fibers, like green salads, broccoli, Cheerioes, and other whole-grain breads and cereals.

Remember, diabetes canNOT be diagnosed by symptoms alone.  You MUST have blood tests from the doctor in order to diagnose diabetes.

As for your irregular periods -- Diabetes CAN cause that, but then again some girls NEVER get regular.  My daughter's periods range anywhere from 30 days to three months, and she's been getting them for 10 years.  [Makes it difficult to try to time for a baby, though . . . .]

Again, Diabetes canNOT be diagnosed by symptoms.  Go see your doctor about BOTH problems.

  2. All those describe me most of the time..

    Hmm

  3. Possibly but you can't know for sure unless you see a doctor.  I would recommend checking out diabetes.org to see all of the symptoms of diabetes.  Now the symptoms could be slightly different for type 1 or type 2.  My advice would be to go to your doctor and get a blood test if you're really worried about it.  Good luck!

  4. Chantal, I don't think you'll be surprised to hear that those are all symptoms of diabetes.  All that is needed to determine if it is or not is a simple, inexpensive blood test. Please see your doctor soon because left untreated, diabetes can be dangerous.  It may not be necessary for you to take insulin injections or even pills.  Some people are able to keep their blood sugar level under control with diet and exercise.  I'm listing other symptoms, but it's unusual for people to have all the symptoms.  Good luck.

    unexplained weight loss

    itchy skin

    infections slow to heal

    impotency

    blurred vision

tingling or numbness if hands or feet

  5. Check your blood sugar.

  6. My very first sign without knowing I had it was I would be extremely thirsty gulp down gallons of a beveridge...After finally getting "quenched" I about 15-20 minutes later I had to pee really bad, like barely able to hold it...15 -20 minutes later I had the same extreme thirst and kept repeating this cycle for half a Summer, I thought it was because of the heat...I was in college and was getting Migraines which fianlly prompted me to go to the clinic, the doctor asked me if if I was thirsty alot and running to the restroom...Needless to say looking at me because I am overweight he pretty much knew off the bat tand they took my blood sugar which was like 400...So if you have a similar pattern of thirst , urination followed by extreme thirst again it is a sign...The Headaches I think had more to do with School stress and the high blood pressure but maybe it is a sign.
