Dear friends,

My friend just bought a laptop and gave me the desktop. I am wondering if one of of you can tell me if I have enough memory or should I get more.

I went on ctrl alt del taskmanager into the performance tab. This is what is said. But I have no clue what it means:

Physical Memory (K)

total 228848

avail 121676

system cached 112288

If i need to buy more. how much should I get???

Please advise

thank you so much,

ruthie

  1. i have 3gb on my laptop, but i usually use around 2gb. So, i would recomend 1 or 2 gb for you, because it sounds like you would have windows 98 or xp. And i have vista.

  2. Okay, Ruthie. For everyday use, that 228 MB of RAM is okay, unless you run really power-hungry programs like Internet Explorer 7 (which I'm running right now), Limewire, Google Earth, etc. But if you wanted more memory, you could by a 256-MB stick of RAM.

    I have a website for you: crucial.com

They have a scan that sees what kind of hardware and what kind of memory it needs.

    Good Luck, Eddie

  3. yes it`s enough.depends for what you use it.but i think it`s enough.

  4. You have 256Mb actual memory.

That is okay for basic internet searching, but 512Mb or 1G would be better, especially if you are going to download anything or play games.

Downloads work well with 512Mb and games work best with at least 1G.

  5. Your computer had 256MB of RAM. This may not be enough depending on what you are using it for. If i was you i would defiantly upgrade to at least 512MB of RAM but would advise 1GB so your computer runs smoothly. Most computers now tend to be sold with at least 2GB of RAM.

    Hope this helps!!!

  6. That is only 256 MB. Any "modern" PC has 4 times that much or more. If it is running Windows 2000 I would bump it up in the 512MB or 1GB range. If you are running Windows XP I would vote for 1-2GB. I am assuming you wont be doing any high end gaming on that type of a machine so 1GB is probably ok. Without knowing more about the PC I can't direct you as to what type of memory to buy. There are at least 3 different standards for RAM that are considered mainstream so dont just go out and buy without knowing which type you need.

Crucial.com can run a scan for you and tell you what type of memory you need. I would buy from www.newegg.com. Amazing prices, fast shipping, great customer service...they should hire me :-)

Anyway if you are just doing very basic web surfing the 256MB might be ok for you, but the lowest I would work with is 1GB these days. Web pages with all their intensive graphics and animations pretty much demand it.

If you need more info I am happy to help. Good luck!
