have just moved to an apartment with my boyfriend, and i CANNOT sleep at ALL during the night...We have been there for 2 1/2 weeks, and i cant seem to be able to sleep. We did get a cat, in which I am allergic severely...At first I thought maybe it was because I couldnt breathe through my nose at night that I couldnt sleep, but after taking Sudafed, I am able to breathe through my nose again...but I cant sleep. Now some people may say, "Maybe its because you just moved and your not adjusted yet..." Truth is, for a while at my house I lived in with my parents, I could sleep, but I would wake up like over 20 times in the middle of the night, toss and turn, etc...Now its to the point where I cant even sleep!! Sometimes, I can get a nap or 2 in during the afternoon, but they dont last long...

What is going on!?!?!

  1. you could have insomnia. many people suffer from insomnia and not have any other medical issues. if you did have insomnia there is no easy way to fix it other than medication or lots of hard work at behavioural training.

i wouldn't suggest taking meds because you could so easily become addicted which can lead to very bad consequences. perhaps try some "insomnia cd's" which you can just put on before you sleep to try and calm you and make it easier to sleep. if that doesnt work perhaps try some natural ways to sleep easier. example: magnesium tablets. you cant become addicted to magnesium and short of taking 50 tablets a day its pretty hard to overdose. magnesium is good at calming and soothing you so its always helpful before bed.

also try to eat a banana or have a banana milkshake before bed. there is a chemical in bananas that makes you sleepy. a common misconception that people tend to make is to have bananas on their cereal in the morning, it actually makes you more tired. :-) good luck

  2. Do you think you might have sleep apnea.  People with sleep apnea awake hundreds of times throughtout the night because they have stopped breathing.

  3. Try following the same routine every night and going to bed at the same time. Have a warm shower/bath, maybe a warm drink, have a radio playing softly in the background, maybe read a little... whatever it is, you have to try to train your mind and body to accept the routine. At the moment, you don't expect to sleep, so you won't. If after a fortnight or so, this doesn't work, do go to your Dr or naturopath and ask their advice.

I wouldn't try any medications just yet, natural or otherwise, just give yourself a chance then get checked out professionally if that doesn't help. You may well have sleep apnea... a great many do and don't realise it, but that can be helped. Sweet dreams.

  4. Well to have insomnia I guess would suggest you've either anxiety or depression. I wonder did maybe moving in with your boyfriend constitute a big life change you're unsure of ?

I'd try some sort of OTC insomnia remedy like Panadol Night or I think you have Somnus in the UK. Try and get to bed at a desired time eg 11 pm ? Try and use tablets to set up a pattern and then reduce the dose

If that doesn't work see your doctor. Things like an overactive thyroid can give you insomnia and non stop thoughts in your head. You'd loose weight fast and have diarrhoea though too if it were thyroid
