I am nursing a 3 week old. Well I am actually pumping because I am under a lot of stress (daughter is in the ICU) and won't let down for him. One of my b*****s has a lump and hurts really bad. I don't have a fever or a red spot. It just hurts bad. I have had mastitis before with my last baby. I had antibiotics the first time and the second time ended up in the hospital. I can't remember if I had a fever or not. I had a red spot though. Should I call the Dr.?

  1. It could just be a clogged milk duct.  I had one under my arm.  I was told to lay warm rags on it and massage it.  I would go ahead and call the doctor and see what he/she says though.

  2. It sounds like a plugged duct.  Pump a little more often, and massage the hard spot.  Apply warm compresses too.  It would be helpful if you could nurse, as babies are more efficient at it.

If you get a fever, you don't need to take antibiotics, unless it's higher than 38c and it lasts for more than 24 hours.

    Get well soon.  :)

Edit: If you do call the doctor, just know that you don't need antibiotics unless the fever lasts for more than 24 hours.  And even if you do have mastitis, you can still give your baby the milk.

  3. Yeah.... definetly call the doctor..... you may be developing mastitis, or may have a clogged milk duct..... either way..... they will be able to help you clear it up faster and give you something for the pain.

  4. I would contact your Dr.

I had mastitis with my son, now 4 months old.

I had had it for about a week and half before seing anyone.  I just assumed it would go away.

I didn't have a fever, but I had red spots on both b*****s, which were agony and very red.  I was in tears trying to feed my son,

Don't lt it gt bad like I did x Good luck
