Question:

Do I have to Prove It?

We are going to buy a used car today and are trading in our brand new truck...our insurance is due, I dont think it has lapsed yet, but it may have. We do have current insurance cards that dont expire until November 08. As long as we show these cards to the sales person and they copy that, are they going to call and make sure that we have it? Do we have to put insurance on the new car and show that we have insurance on it? Or do they just take the current insurance card and copy it and assume we have it???

Please help, thanks so much!

  1. They will have to call to put the new car onto the policy, they'll need new cards with the vin.  If you are lapsed the ins company will not issue new cards until the matter is resolved.

  2. Yeah I worked afterhours customer service at an insurance call center and we got calls in the early evening from car dealers wanting to verify insurance.

So yeah it has happened before. I don't know if all of them do it.

Actually unlike what the above poster says *you* will likely have to call back during normal business hours (assuming 9-5 M-F are the hours your company will do this for you)  to put the car on the policy.  Your policy docs should have a section entitled "Newly Aquired Autos" which will describe your duties once you buy a new car, and how long you have to do this.

  3. Yes, then will verify coverage.  And if it is lapsed, you don't want to be driving anyway, so make a phone call and find out before you get embarrassed at the dealers, and quit trying to beat the system.

  4. They will photocopy your insurance card and send you on your way.
