  1. the carryon luggage that you carry you take everywhere with you. but the check-in luggage when you depart from the terminal you only go to baggage claim if your changing the plane, NOT THE AIRLINE.(But that is only sometimes.)unless you ahve worked with the airline you might have to re-check in with the other flight or airline.

  2. No. the ground crew will process the luggage exchange.

  3. Only if you are changing carriers.  Fly one airline all the way and they will take care of your checked baggage.  At least that is the way it is supposed to work.

  4. no not if you stay with the same airline they do it for you

  5. Nope

  6. The correct answer (despite what has been written) is that it depends on a couple of factors.  If you're not changing airlines when you change planes, then no -- they'll do it for you.

If you are changing airlines when you change planes, the luggage will be transferred for you if the airlines in question have what is known as an interline baggage agreement.  Most airlines in the US have them with each other (a notable exception is Southwest, who doesn't have an agreement with anyone).

If you're switching between airlines that do not have an agreement, then you will have to claim your luggage at the intermediate stop and re-check it with the new airline.

To further add to the answer, if your stop involves going from one country to another and you need to go through customs and immigration, you will need to claim your luggage before you go through customs and re-check it after you have cleared -- even if you are flying on the same airline.
