Question:

Do I have to cite in an article summary?

I have to write a summary of an article. I am trying to avoid having this paper being considered as plagarism.

My question is, since I am just summarizing it (paraphrasing/putting it in my own words) do I have to cite each line that I type up (just because everything's of the author's idea/thought)? I did not use any direct quotes but did put everything down in my own words, do I have to quote/cite.

My summary is of the article's content only so I don't know how to go about this... since it's different from doing a regular research essay.

  1. As long as you put in the beginning of the paper something like, "I found the information provided in *article name* by *author's name* to be very interesting/disturbing/contradicting" (or whatever adjective you want to use) that way your ready knows you're summarizing and responding to an article.

You don't have to cite anything from the article after that.  Just make sure you use quotations around any phrases that are taken directly from the article.  Example: I was surprised when the doctor responded so cruelly to the patient stating, "You are going to die tomorrow."  haha, get it?

Using quotations automatically means you are quoting from the article and as long as you're citing info from one source, the reader will understand what you're saying.
