Do I have to drain my hot water heater tank? If so how often?

I do not have easy access to the drainage valve due to its location, and also may just change it out for a new one or tankless water heater.

  1. either way, there's on right or wrong.

if you choose to drain it once a month, you may wear out the valve or get some debris stuck in it where it will no longer seal.  you'll have to change it.  also, a lot of debris is larger than the port of the valve and will not be able to pass.

i used to install full port ball valves for customers who wanted to keep their water heaters clean.

if you don't drain 'em.  eventually they start to "rumble" and peculate.

  2. you really shouldn't drain it at all, if you do, the seat on the gate valve may leak forever after that...should you decide to drain anyway, only draw out enough water to remove any sediment on the bottom. That's the only reason for doing that

  3. Don't do it, if you don't HAVE to. Water heaters should lastaroundd 7-10 yrs. If you're having issues, or if it's older then replace it, or get a tankless. The tankless may cost more, but it will save money on utilities, and there are tax breaks to offset some of the costs.

  4. The only time you want to drain it, is when it's being replaced.

  5. By code you should have access to the drainage valve. Just hook up a water hose and drain it. It should be drained once a year.
