I live in CA, and want to get a Yamaha Zuma to save gas. I heard if its under 50cc then you don't need a motorcycle licence.

  1. Laws vary by state.  In Washington, you have to have a motorcycle endorsement if the scooter can go more than 35 miles per hour.  Any vehicle being driven on the road needs a license plate.

  2. Not real sure about CA, but in most states a motorcycle endorsement on your license is needed if you are operating a motorbike that goes over 35 mph on flat ground, OR if it has an engine displacement over 49cc.

If you are referring to a "plate" or "tag" for said Yamaha; YES you need registration for every motorized vehicle legally operated on a public roadway.

My guess is, California, like most states, does not require you to have a motorcycle license for the Zuma. (although I am not familiar with the Zuma, I am taking your word that it is only 49cc and probably only does about 33mph)  This is why so many mopeds, scooters, etc are all EXACTLY 49cc....that's the law in most states.

  3. You still need a motorcycle license to actually drive it on the road, but you do not have to have the moped registered with the DMV if it is under 50cc.

  4. Always wear a helment i guess your questions answered :)
