Do I have to ground my portable generator?

I bought a portable 1500 watt champion generator to use when I go camping in my van. I have never heard of anyone ground one of these. The directions say to do it. I can't seem to find a "FOR SURE" answer., Any help?

  1. The National Electrical Code does not require it to be grounded, but it would be a good idea to.


  2. Is there anything around to ground the generator to?

    Water pipe?

    If you can it has never hurt to ground electronics. It could conceivably damage or hurt your plugged in equip if your gen were not grounded.
