  1. You always need a subscription with Tivo, regardless of what your TV source is (antenna, cable, cable box, satellite box.)

    You can configure the Tivo so that it can control your satellite box so that it can change the channel to record your shows.

    However, Dish Network also offers its own DVR, at a much lower price than Tivo.  Granted, their DVR isn't nearly as easy to use, or robust as a Tivo...  I really wish you could shove the Tivo software inside the Dish DVR and use that.  Even my 8 year old Series One Tivo does things so much better than Dish's DVR it's just sad.

    Did you know that thier are collectors for Directv Tivo s. I used to get big bucks for them because people loved them

    tivo has a stand alone unit that can work to any source, i.e.: directv,dishnet,fta,cable,etc.

    if you are talking in general, dish network have their own pvr (private video recorder) built into the reciever.
