Do I have to have car insurance?

Question

I live in Phoenix, Arizona. If I have a car (salvage title) do i need to register it and/or have insurance on it if its engine,transmission and tires are yanked and is sitting on cinder blocks? It's a project car so it will not be drive able for a long time. But when it is done and drive able i do plan to register/insure it. :D

No, you do not need to have insurance on it if it is not being driven.  

If it is a valuable car, or at least difficult/expensive to replace, you should probably check and see if it is covered by your homeowner's or renter's insurance while it is sitting in pieces.  If not, you might inquire with some "agreed value" insurer about insuring the body, like what if a tree...oh...yeah, Phoenix...and it won't get flooded, either.  Nevermind.

I guess there is an up side to living in Phoenix after all.

edit:  You DO NOT need to insure a vehicle that is not being driven.  Whatever cop told you that was talking out his ***.  

Look at it this way...you're NEVER going to get in trouble for not having insurance if you don't get in an accident and don't get pulled over while you don't have insurance.  

Since you aren't driving it, that can't happen.  

If you want to cover your bases, you get a certificate of non-operation.  That way when you DO go to register it, you have some proof (at least legally, even if it isn't airtight factually) that you weren't driving it without tags or insurance.

We had a car kinda like that in our drive.  Anyway's, it's on your property.  You have to plate, title and have insurance.  Found this out from a cop.  So stupid since we had to work on it for months first.
