Im planning on applying to some local stores for my first job. They aren't serious jobs.. just things like ice cream parlors, and grocery stores. I was wondering.. do I need to include a cover letter?

  1. Are they asking for resumes? They usually just ask you to apply for an application.

    I would say no

  2. It will really make you stand out as it's probably something not too many people do for their first jobs. I would also think it would be great practice for you, so when you are applying for more "important" jobs you really want down the road, it will be something you are used to doing. I say yes!

  3. Do you have to? No! I will say one thing that a cover letter can explain things that your resume can't. You cover letter can talk about your skills and hard skills as they relate to the job. I would strongly suggest drafting one for each opportunity as long as it is tailored to the position you are applying too.

  4. When applying for a job, 'serious' or not, if you want to stand out from the other applicants, it is not the time to be lazy.  Make the extra effort, especially if you have specific experience or additional information that does not fit on a standard application, and you will find the extra effort will pay off in the end.

  5. Since such jobs don't ordinarily require experience, a resume may not be needed.  I assume that you are simply sending in an application, in which case a brief cover letter, indicating the position in which you are interested (and where you heard about it) would be appropriate.
