Do I have to leave the country to get my L1A visa extended?

I am currently in the US with an L1A visa, do I have to leave the country during the extension process? I know that I can file all the papers while staying in the US, but what about the new visa stamp - can I get this in the US or do I need to leave the country?

  1. Visa stamping is only done in US Embassy outside of US.
