  1. It may depend upon the state but usually if you are 18 and have a car in your name you can get your own policy and get dropped off a parents policy.  The agent may be trying to keep his commissions up because the normal practice is to charge the young driver premium n the most expensive car (i.e. daddy's Jag not moms 6 year old Honda) So if you got an old beater the total premium would be much smaller because your coverages would be lower.

Talk to another insurance agent a get their input I'd recommend  an Independent agent who can check several companies.

  2. If you are 18 and own your own car, you can get your own coverage.  Doesn't matter where you live.  If its yout parent's car, thats another question.

  3. It depends upon the insurance company. The "better" companies, such as State Farm, Allstate, and Farmers are more comprehensive. This means that when you are insured you can drive any car and anybody can drive your car and you will be covered. Some companies you are only covered driving your car. If you dad is covered by one of the comprehensive policies the insurance company will require everyone in the household to be on the same policy because there is a possibility that you could drive any other car in the family at any time. If you were to get your own policy the insurance company would cancel your dad's policy. It has nothing to do with the agents commission but yes, the agent would not only lose your commission but also your parents' commission.

  4. Your dad probably misunderstood his agent. You can own your own policy even when you are still living with your dad. Bear in mind though, you will not get the same discount as your dad if you own your own policy or moved out from your parents. Email me if you have any question.
