I have no problem with paying the bill it's just that i don't feel comfortable paying them. They seemed a little shady. Then when I checked with the BBB of their state, their business was not accredited. So do I still have to pay them? I want to get rid of the debt,I just don't want to be suckered in.And who do I pay? If I send the money to the original company that I owe the debt to will they accept my payment or "forward" it to the debt agency? HELP!!!!

  1. You can pay the debt directly to whoever it is you owe the money.  You do not have to pay a collection agency.  Call the company that you owe, ask the amount, get an address, and send it directly to them.

  2. not every legal and reputable company in the country is accredited by BBB. if the company does not ask to be listed or if no one files a complaint against them, then they will have no record with the BBB. i know debt collectors can be pushy and rude, but as soon as you pay off your debt they will be off your back.

  3. The BBB is a private organization that has absolutely no authority over anyone, including their own members.  Businesses pay membership fees to be 'registered' with the BBB.  It is extremely common for business to not belong.

The original creditor either assigned or sold the debt to the collection agency.  You have to deal with the collection agency.  Before you pay the debt, get a written settlement agreement that details how much and when you will pay.  Keep it, along with your payment proof, forever.  Do not give the collector direct access to your bank account.
