I work in two different cities in Ohio. Do I have to pay local income tax to both cities or not? I've been hearing mixed responses from people about it.

  1. It should just be where you live.

  2. generally you pay income tax to the city in which the income was earned

so yes, you will pay local income tax to two cities, but not for the same income, usually

your paystubs and W-2s should break this down

  3. http://tax.ohio.gov/online_services/thef...

Enter your address and it will tell you what taxes you need to pay.

  4. Local taxes are sales taxes based on purchases.  You pay that tax at the register in the store.  Doesn't matter which city you live in.

Otherwise you have STATE taxes based on the state you live in.  Or FEDERAL taxes.

Then you have payroll taxes and they don't care which city you live in, and property taxes.  None of which are based on the city in which you live.

  5. In Ohio, you pay local income tax to both the city where you work AND the city where you live.  This is the only state where this is the case.

Local income tax is only collected in a handful of states.  Everytime someone asks about them, you always get the uneducated who know nothing about them stating they don't exist or confusing them with sales and property taxes.

    Edit:

If you live in Town A and work in Town B at one job and Town C in another.  You definitely will be paying A, although you will get some sort of credit for what you've payed Town B and Town C.  You should be paying Town B and Town C.  However, sometimes if you normally work in Town C and occasionally work in Town D, the business will just credit everything to Town C.

This is contrary to Pennsylvania where you pay only where you live, but the employer is only required to send the money to where you work.  If you live in Town A and work in Town B, your employer sends the money at Town B's rate to Town B and when you file your return Town A is required to get all of your money from Town B.

  6. well, look at your pay stubs and see!

  7. If you actually work in two different cities and each has a city income tax, you will pay tax to each but it will only be on the wages you earn in each city.  Your w-2 should have this broken out.  You don't pay tax on your entire income to each city.
