I am a booth renter at a salon. The salon has been closed all week due to a tropical storm. Do I still have to pay rent for this week if the salon is closed?

  1. It doesn't seem fair.  You are paying for the use of the salon.  The owner might argue that you are still getting the use of the "name" of the salon so you are still getting some benefit.

If the salon owner says you owe rent, i would pay it.  But i would watch out for a new place to work and i would write some changes into my work agreement with them./

  2. yes as the weather is not a concern of the owner since you cannot work.

  3. Look at it this way, they still have to pay a mortgage, taxes, utilities, etc to keep the space.

You can buy insurance to cover your loss, but they might not even cover a natural disaster.

  4. Yes, it's a bummer, but yes.

  5. Well it all depends on the terms on your rental agreement. Normally I would say yes you are obligated to pay rent. The salon can't be held responsible for natural occurrences like storms. On the other hand if you pay them weekly and they haven't been open for business they should be fair and not claim rent when you were not in the opportunity to earn your rent. Read the fine print about payment.

If they do want you to pay try negotiating half the rent instead of the full amount. Good luck!
