Do I have to place my son on my car insurance?

Question

Someone told me if my car had under insured motorist it covers any one who drives it why do I need 2 put my son on it then. The insurance company says I have to but this other person has 3 kids and 2 cars fixed after they drove them with under insured motorist on his insurance. confused in TEXAS

"Someone" is wrong.  Don't let them operate on you, either.

Underinsured motorist covers the people in your car, if they get hit by a different car, that has SOME insurance, but not enough to cover their injuries.  

If you don't list your son on your policy, your insurance doesn't have to pay for your son, or your car, or the car your son hits.  YOU have to pay for it all, by writing a check.  

These people are giving you advice, without a license to do so.  I'm quite sure that their agent has fixed things to make it right, but they have no CLUE.  

Don't take advice from people who aren't licensed to give it.   Unless they're willing to guarantee, in writing, that they'll write the check if they have given you bad advice, so you aren't out of pocket.

My mother was told the same thing by Geiko when I got my license.  She had to sign a waiver stating I would not drive any of the covered vehicles to keep from adding me.  A few years later when she wanted to add me they would not let her and she switched insurances.

Most states, and most insurance companies require all kids, with a license, living in your household to be listed on your auto policy.  The Reason is that the  Insurance companies are required by law to cover any driver in the household, whether they are listed or not.  If you don't list them and they get into an accident, they will cancel you in a heartbeat

I was told whomever drives your car is covered..... .I didn't put my son on right away, either..he didn't have an accident, but I did put him on eventually...
