Question:

Do I have to play someone if they lay a quarter on a pool table?

If two people lay a quarter down to request a match, and you and your pool partner just got the table, and were on your first match against each other, and there's only one table in the place, is it bad etiquette to turn them down and just continuing playing yourselves?

  1. Listen to Vegas Matt- He has the right idea.

  2. I think it is, if there is only table at the place, if there was more than one I would say it would be okay to turn them down but if there is only one then you should play them.

  3. House Rules prevail.

You've been given some good answers and a couple bad. If you line up 10 quarters and there are only two players everyone in the house waiting to play are going to know you are pulling (or trying to pull) a dumbass trick.

Every quarter represents a different player waiting in line to play.

Where many bars got away from the "who's next" to play by coins on the table, they have hung a board and all players sign up. Then, as the player takes his or her turn, they erase their name and the board shows the next person in line.

Don't be a jerk. If you and your friend want to play alone, go to a poolroom or a bar that has several tables.

  4. Proper etiquette in a bar is to play the next person who put quarters on the table. I guess you could just say, "I don't want to play you," and then just sit down for awhile, and if nobody's at the table after a little while get up and play again.

The easiest way to avoid this situation if you and a friend are playing is to line up 10 sets of quarters on the table. Usually when people walk up and see that they will not bother trying to get a game.

  5. Yeah, if there is only a limited amount of tables, and provided you are not playing on timed table (although I'm assuming you are playing coin op) If someone lays down quarters, its a challenge.  You can either play them, or give the table up (which I would make them earn it)  If you lose, put more quarters up.

  6. Hi there.  It would be bad etiquette to ignore them and their quarter and continue playing.  Most people would understand if you wanted to play a few games together.  However, in most places with a single table, it is common courtesy to honor that the quarter means that the person or partners would be playing the next match.

Good luck and hope this helps!

  7. What it really means is that they want next dibs on the table.  If youre at a bar with one table you can t hog it.  But if youre at a pool hall you'll never see that happening.  It's just a way to say I'm next.  Juat like at like Dave and busters you put a quarter/token up to play DDR next.
