Question:

Do I have to put flooring under my range oven?

Like a amateur I measured the incorrect height for an outlet above my range. The drywall is all done and i'd hate to have to tear it down. I don't have any slack left in the wiring to that outlet so I'd have to expose at all to move it. Right now I have 1/4" clearance so if I don't install flooring under my range it will be fine. Is this ok to do?

  1. A better method for plugging a hole in drywall is to cut a backer board a bit thinner than the widest dimension of your hole, but a few inches longer.  Then s***w a drywall s***w into the middle of it to hold it with, and feed it into the hole and position it so that you can s***w through your main drywall sheet and into the backer board on each side of the long dimension.  this will give you a place to s***w a new piece of drywall onto that is cut to fit neatly into the hole.  then mud, tape and finish the gap around the plugged hole.

  2. You can run the flooring under the range as far as you need to as long as the first few inches are uner the range.....no one will see it anyway. Just adjust the legs of the range so it is level.

  3. Some codes say you have to run flooring under the range, not completely under, but you do have to.

  4. Wiring should be able to be fished through the wall and redone without having to tear out the drywall. Just attach the new longer wiring to the ends of what you have there now. Then go the other end of the existing wiring and pull it through until you get to the ends of the new wire. Undo the old wire and hook up the new. It shouldn't be a problem.

This way you can install flooring under the range, which you should do if you ever expect to sell your house in the future. Home inspectors look everywhere!!

Edit: If you fish the wiring through the wall, you will be detaching the old wiring and then attaching the new wiring at the box so it won't violate code. It will be the same as if you'd used the correct length of wiring from the beginning.

  5. I would definitly put flooring under stove, though I seen it not done many times, usually by amateaurs.

It will help resell value when/if you sell home, the legs are adjustable to meet your cabinet height.

To fix the wiring problem you have 2 choices, you can buy a longer stove cord or you can tear into the drywall to fix it.

  6. can't you just extend the wiring ? add a foot or so ?

  7.      It's been done this way, I insist my people do it the right way but, in this instance where it will mean money and more work, we'd leave it go.
