  1. subwoofers work on coils and the magnet powering the cone to produce lower frequency SPL to better be called bass. when the amp powers the subwoofer(s) it hits, and wants to move back, to recoil and deal with all of the sound waves being produced. the subwoofer doesn't have to be in a box, but definately stable. such as in a wheel well but screwed to the frame or a surrounding. boxes are really recommended because they are easier to manufacture and set up with the subwoofer. ported or sealed is fine, but if not stable then it will move around and produce little to no bass that you want.

  2. yes so that you can get the sound that they were designed for although some custom installations use other things such as the trunk as a box

  3. you dont "have to" but if you want it to sound good then yes you have to. It doesnt move air without an enclosure. Technically you can just lay it in the back seat and hook wires from the Voice Coils to the amp lol.

  4. Its all bad to have subwoofers not in a box

  5. Absolutely yes!  Without an enclosure, the air goes around the edge of the speaker from front to back, and you get very little sound projection.

  6. Unless it's designed for "free air" use, you must use a subwoofer with a correctly matched enclosure.  Without it, you risk damage to the sub.
