Do I have to register my vehicle in California or can I keep my North Carolina tags?

My husband is in the military and we bought the car in California last year and registered it there. Now I'm in North Carolina while my husband is deployed and was thinking of registering it here, since my California registration has expired and I just realized it =(

When we return to Cali, we will have to register it there? Will we have to register it there within a certain number of days or upon expiration of our NC tags..................or is it ok to just renew our registration and tags with North Carolina?

Most States do not require the changing of registration for Military or college students.
