Question:

Do I have to replace the whole windscreen wiper if the spring has broken?

I was cleaning my N reg Punto last week and lifted up teh windscreen wiper arm. As I did this a large spring sprang out and snapped - so I couldn't get it back on.

Now this wiper still moves but does not wipe the window properly. Do I need a new arm or wiper? Could I do this myself or would i have to take it to a garage? Also how much would it cost?

Thank you all :)

  1. In the 'old days' you could replace the spring, but alas today you will need to replace the arm, if money's tight, try a breakers yard...

  2. You need a wiper arm, probably available from your nearest car accessory shop. They usually have a good range from either Bosch or motorfit etc.  Cost anything from 6 - 12 pounds for your car.

  3. You will need a new arm, if you possess a 13mm spanner you can do it yourself in about 30 seconds.

If you get a Fiat dealer to do the job they will charge you an hours labour.

  4. My boyfriend recently advised me to change my windscreen wipers because one fell out and the other was old. I tried to save some money and just bought the rubber bits for a peugot, cost me 6/7 quid. . .It's only now in the rubbish weather that we've realised they are rubbish and i should have just replaced the arm, about 12 quid each but would have last a good while.

You shouldnt need to take it to the garage just get yourself down to Halfords, they've got charts for every car, dead easy to work out what you need and get advice. . .hope that helps xr
