Do I have to report non-taxable benefits paid under a long term disability plan on my child's OSAP application

The premiums were paid 100% by the employee. OSAP is the student assistance plan in Ontario.

  1. The answer is yes.  The LTD benefit payments you receive are to cover your lost wages due to the disability.  You would want to report this to OSAP because this is money that you are receiving; therefore it would show how much you are actually earning.  

    I would recommend following this rule of thumb when you are required to report your earnings:

    Tell them everything!  Let them know of any income or benefit payments that you are receiving.  It is better to be safe than sorry.  If it is important for them to know, and you intentionally do not tell them, that could put a damper on the situation.  Especially in this case, since the LTD is a wage replacement benefit.  If you did not report this income to them, it would look like you aren't earning any money to OSAP, and that would obviously be incorrect.  =)
