Question:

Do I have to report this unattended car to the police?

A car(SUV, looking good ) has sit in front of my rent house for about a week and a half. Even though it is located on the border between my place and neighbor's, neighbors seem to expect me to report this car.

Is it hassle to ask the police to take it away in San Jose, CA?

Thanks.

  1. No it's not a hassle.  In California it is illegal to leave your vehicle parked on the street for more then 72 hours.  You can contact the police or your local parking enforcement.  They will need the license plate, the color, the make (Ford, Chevy, Toyota, etc...) the address and nearest cross street.  It is a good thing to report the vehicle as it could be stolen or abandoned.  The sooner you get it removed the better for your community as the last thing you want are people dumping useless cars on your street or criminals to know where no one is watching.

  2. There is no hassle at all. You either have an abandoned car, but because its good looking, it might be stolen. The police will tow the car to the tow yard, and when the owner comes to claim it, then they have to pay for it, not your or your neighbor. Make sure it doesn't belong to anyone on the rental property, or you could get into some trouble and be liable to pay for the towing and storage fees.

  3. I doubt anyone is REQUIRED to report it.  If you want them to DO anything about it, you need to let them know.  Just call the local police non-emergency number and say an unidentified vehicle has been parked near your property for a week.  It should take less than 5 minutes and be no hassle at all.

  4. why do your neighbors want you to report it?  why dont they report it? and is it even legal to tow a car if it is legally parked on a public street?

  5. too soon, leave it alone after a month ...Maybe

  6. i called the police for a parked car on my lawn and i received 7 misdemeanors, have it towed at the owners expense

  7. I would advise you to check with the neighbors first, then call the cops.

  8. You don't have to call, but I know there are certain laws depending on your city municipal codes that allow a vehicle to be parked on the street for a certain amount of time. The city that I work for has the law of 72 hours. I would call the police department, just to talk to the front desk officer and ask them, and if so, you can make a complaint and they will come out. It isn't a hassle because there are people that work within the department that aren't police officers that deal specifically with vehicles in the same situation :)

  9. Generally, you can report any vehicle as suspicious (and being abandoned can be suspicious.) In theory, the police department should check the vehicle to make sure it isn't stolen.

In some jurisdictions, however, if the vehicle is legally parked and registered, and on a public street, the police department cannot remove the vehicle. When you call the police you should ask if they can remove the vehicle if it has been abandoned.
