you may want to take placement tests just to find out if you test into a higher level class. this will save you money and earn you college credits for classes that you don't even have to take.

Usually, yes... placement tests help the college determine your level of skill in a specific subject, unlike the SATs which are essentially just an overall assessment of whether or not you're functioning at grade level.  Placement tests determine at what level classes you can skip and which you'll need to take before you can move on in many gen. eds. like math, science, english, and foreign language.
