Yeah, I'm new to this whole maintenance thing. Is it already pre-waxed or do I have to go get it done?

I was also wondering when is the right time to take the board to the shop...

  1. The answer is that you dont "have to". Most new boards have wax already. It's fairly cheap to have your local store look at it and wax it for you...or you can do it yourself easily. Go to "about.com".

  2. If you bought the board brand new, 9 times out of ten it will come factory waxed. And you wont need to get your board tuned this year dude. Strap on those bindings and get shredding!!!If the board has even the slightest glare on the bottom its allready waxed

  3. Wax the board, using an OLD iron and melt the wax onto the base, then iron it in. The wax should melt quickly but not smoke.  It will take at least 10 hot waxes to get your base saturated.  Have a pro shop tune the board at the start of the season each year.  Then do a hot wax every 3-4 days of use. Also touch up your edges every 7-10 days of riding, more often when on hard pack or ( heaven forbid)  rocks.  I use canning paraffin for the base wax and then rub on a specific temperature wax for each day of use.

If you are a competitor, ask your buddies what they do, then take their advice with a couple of grains of salt. No need for the real expensive wax unless you are racing on a circuit.

  4. Ive heard that the factory wax is the best you can get.... I wouldnt wax it.
