When I got married, I brought with me 2 dogs. One has been my dog since the first time we met, we've been completely inseparable, the other, was my mother's dog, and she had told me if I didn't take him then she would have him put down.
We moved in with my husband and his Cat, which more or less came with the house (previously owned by his deceased great grandmother.
We had been talking about getting another cat to help his cat feel less outnumbered by my dogs, when his grandmother had a stray kitten follow her home. It seemed like destiny, so we kept him.
A wile later I found a dog that someone had just dumped off at the local dump. He was starving, and probably would not have survived another 24 hours on his own. We brought him home, and agreed that if a vet gave him a clean bill of health he could stay.
Nearly a year later we found 2 abandoned and dying kittens. We brought them home, nursed them to health, and tried diligently to find them homes. Realizing this wasn't going to happen I contacted the local animal shelter, and they told me that due to the kennels being already crowded the kittens would be immediately euthanized! So we kept them.
Two days ago an injured puppy wandered into my yard and I left him be assuming he would wander right back home...well, that never happened. I've been making all sorts of "found" flyers, and contacted the shelter about taking him, but after seeing him they determined that he had a minimum of 1/4 American Pit Bull terrier in him, and would therefore not recommend him for adoption of any kind as they are considered "dangerous" dogs. So my husband and I are considering adopting him to save him from euthanasia as well. He would absolutely be our last animal.
My husband's family think were insane, but my question is, if no one else will help these animals, and under our care they are well provided for (2 meals a day, all vaccines, regular check-ups, they all get along well, are seemingly happy, with a safe and clean environment.) what is wrong with having 8 pets??
