Driving TO Mexico and IN Mexico are different.  Check out the different insurance agencies but your best bet for one or two days is to buy it through the rental car agency if you are renting, or you can buy it from reputable insurance companies.

the law does not compel you to get it, but if you feel better about it, then you should get it.

i drive my new bmw and new truck down there all the time. ive driven down there for years and never had anything happen.

but yeah, get it if you accident prone.

if you cant afford it, then oh well, just go. no harm no foul.

You do NOT need a Mexican Automobile Insurance policy to drive to Mexico.  With that said, it is HIGHLY recommended.  If you are in a boarder town, you will stick out like a sore thumb and it is said, that you will be targeted by other non-US drivers for intentional "accidents".  Then you end up getting in trouble and "shaked down" by the notorious Mexican police who are about as crooked as they come.  

I went to Purto Nuevo about two years ago.  I called my insurance company as asked them if I was covered.  My insurance company, which at the time was Geico, said I was fully covered up to 50 miles deep into Mexico.  Where I was was a bit further.  I went online and bought a policy online in about 10 minutes from start to finish.  Very easy and it only cost me about $30.  I bought a weekend policy.  Small price to pay for piece of mind.

It is not forced by law, as in USA. If you want it, you can get it, but you are not forced.

You must purchase Mexico Insurance even if you are in Mexico for 1 hour.   You can Get Mexico Insurance online so you do not have to stop at the border.  I have used Mexbound.com and they are easy to use.
