I'm setting up a small website for my relative's business services. He currently is only taking cash, but wants to accept payment on his website through PayPal. Does he need to set up a "Doing Business As" account? Thanks!

Ps I'm asking this question in two sections b/c I'm not sure where start.

  1. No you do not need a DBA to set-up an Business account with Paypal.com.  However, it does help in setting up banking accounts for business purposes.

  2. Paypal will not ask for your DBA forms. We have a Business account with Paypal, and all Paypal asked is the business name and business address.

Paypal allows your business account to be connected to your personal checking account, not necessarily a business account. But if your friend wants to keep his personal bank account from his business bank account, then your friend needs to file DBA as banks will want to see your DBA approval before allowing you to open a business bank account

If your friend is running a sole proprietorship, he can run the business and set up Paypal account even if he did not file his DBA with the county. He can just report the earnings he got in his Schedule C tax form
