I am going to be having a root canal tomorrow and I want to make sure that I am making the right decision. I have had extensive orthodontic treatment in the past. Recently I noticed that my #7 tooth is slightly grayer then the rest. I went to my dentist and they took an x-ray and there is a small gray area at the root of that tooth. They referred me to an endodontic; He tested the tooth with a cold test and I could not feel anything cold on my tooth at all. The part about going through this procedure that bothers me the most is that fact that I am currently in ZERO pain. The tooth does not hurt at all, is not sensitive to hot or cold, and does not hurt when I chew on it. The only reason I had my dentist look at it was because of the color. Is it possible that a root canal is unnecessary? Also, I have also been informed that it is much better off and less painful to do the procedure before it becomes infected and inflamed. Is this true? Any advice would be appreciated.
