Question:

Do I need a chidcare license??

I have done alot of childcare over my life and now in my late 30's have decided to do childcare as my career. My question is do I have to become licensed? How many children can I watch without getting my license? How do I go about getting one? I am in NY state.

Also, what do you think is a fair price to charge for babysitting? Per hour, per child? or Full time rate? I would include meals and snacks.

Any information you have would help, thanks.

  1. If you are lisenced you can take in people that are funded for childcare through the state.  I would call other childcare providers (posing as a customer) to find out average rates because rates vary by the area.  Consider multi-child discounts for siblings, determine an age difference and special hours you're willing to accomodate.  Hours outside of 9-5 may be charged a higher rate.  With snacks, you may need to have a food handlers card or this may be included in your childcare lisence...remember food allergies, and firstaid/CPR.  You can contact different agencies requiring lisencing...I know it requires a background check and often an in-home inspection and interview by child protection services.
