Do I need a dvd recorder with a digital tuner if I have cable?

My old dvd recorder had a tuner and Im buying a new one so I wanted to know if I needed to buy one with a digital tuner and if I did buy one with a digital tuner would I get more channels?

I have WOW! cable(no cable box) and when I had my old dvd recorder, I could put the cable cord from the wall into my dvd recorder and then connected another cord from my dvd recorder to my tv and I also connected the rca cables from my dvd recorder to my tv. I was hoping to setup my new dvd recorder the same way so would I need an internal tuner in my dvd recorder and would I get more channels than I have now?
