I have an '00 explorer sport rated for a 3,500lb trailer. It has a ball on the bumper. Do I need to buy a hitch, or is the bumper good for the 3,500lb rating?

  1. well, if it says 3500 lbs, thats total, meaning the trailer, plus weight. Say your trailer is 1000 pounds, you can carry an additional 2500 lbs with it.  If its rated for that, thats what it can hold. If you are towing a utility cart, or and atv or something, or even a smaller boat, that would be fine. anything more, definitely get a hitch.  If you plan on towing cars, or a big boat, get a hitch.

  2. You need a hitch. Most bumpers are only rated for 1000lbs.

  3. As long as the bumper is factory this vehicle will do just fine pulling the trailer, no hitch needed......
