Do I need a key to start my 1982 Honda Express moped?

I just bought an 82 honda express moped and it does not have an ignition. i was wondering if a key is needed to kickstart it, or if it is so old that it can be kickstarted without a key.

the reason it doesn't start now is because the carb needs to be cleaned out.

  1. I just had the key part removed from my 78 Hobbit, so now I just put the switch in the run position to start it and in the kill position to turn it off. I suppose I could have had another key cut, but it would just get lost, too..... I don't know what I do with the keys to that thing. Anyway...

    Good luck!

  2. If you dont have the key, and dont really care about having a key. then you could remove the ignition system and bypass it with the wiring.. also known as hotwiring.

  3. I had one in highschool and loved it,yes you do have to have to have the key in the on position to kick start it.If you dont have a key take the ignition off and take it to a local lock smith you should be able to get a key cut for about $20.00.You can also find parts and diagrams at Bike Bandit.com Good luck.
