Question:

Do I need a license to engineer electrical in WA state?

I am a licensed electrician in the state of Washington. I was wondering if you need a special license to engineer my own work. I mean "engineer" as in draw up blue prints for new and old installations. Also is there a cut off point for residential or commercial installations?

I tried finding information on lni.wa.gov in regards to electrical but came up with nothing. I tried reading the WA RCW seeing if there was something but could find nothing as well. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Anything that can be considered to be providing engineering services requires a license in every jurisdiction in the USA. Look for the rules and regulations of the state licensing agency.

There are exceptions for the sale of products rather than services. The safety of products is assured by testing agencies like Underwriters Laboratories rather than by licensing the engineers that design them.

There is likely an exception for repair and rennovation work, but if you need to submit a drawing to get a building permit, the drawing will need to be done under the direct supervision of a licensed engineer. There may also be limited exceptions for work done on your own property or on the property of your employer.
