Do I need a model release if I hold a photo contest on my website?

Is a model release necessary if people will be sending pictures of themselves for an online contest? Do I have to get their signature, or can it be done online? Thanks in advance!

  1. The only point in having the contest is to collect as many beautiful models as you can to use for the purposes of advertisement, product endorsements or possible future modeling for certain "types" of magazines or publications. Those magazines or other advertisers cannot use the photos without the model release, so YES...having the signed model release is VERY important. If the "model" is a minor, the parent or guardian MUST sign the release form. I suggest that you "customize" the model release form with your business name on the top and be sure to be SPECIFIC about HOW the photos may be used in the future. Some "generic" model release forms don't cover ALL BASES, so that's why I have produced about 3 different versions of MY model release. I do NOT suggest that it be done online....as I don't even know of a site that does that.

    Good Luck

  2. For the purposes of the contest, it's enough to show them the terms and require that they click to agree. If you intend to use the photos for commercial purposes beyond displaying them on your website, you'll need signed releases.
