Question:

Do I need a new router, or do I need 2?

I have a NetGear WGT624 v3. I have 2 Gateway, 1 Dell, and 1 Sony Vaio laptop that I have a hard time getting all of the to connect at the same time. At best, I get 3 out of 4, but it's usually only 2 of them at a time it seems. Sometimes, when a laptop powers down, it is not able to connect to the network as soon as it is booted back up. I have to tap into the router with a working PC and change the wireless channel. I do this daily. In order to solve my problem, do you think I need a newer more up to date router? If so, exactly what feature am I looking for? Do you think I could get away with connecting a second router and split the wireless workload between laptops? Thanks for your help..

Here is a link to a pic of my wireless set up.

  1. You should get a new router. Most newer routers can easily handle four or more computers connected at the same time. If you do decide to buy a new one, you should choose a wireless-n router. These routers are much easier to setup and can transfer information at a much faster speed than similar wireless-g routers. The link below sells a very good (and inexpensive) wireless-n router rated by CNET computers to be some of the best for your money.

If the router is about $95, you should wait until it goes on sale again. The sale price is just under $75.

  2. Sounds like maybe a new router will do you better.  You dont need more than one, just replace the one you have.  See how it works for a bit.  If it improves the situation keep it, if it doesnt, return it and ask us again.
