Do I need a passport to drive to Canada?

I plan on driving to Niagara Falls this August(2008). I heard that after June 2008 you will need a passport? Is this true?

No, this is not true for about another year.  The current ID requirements for travel relate more to the US than to Canada.  However it is a good idea to meet the US requirements since you will have to get back into there.  In reality the same ID requirements are generally required by the Canadian side simply because, unless you are a Canadian citizen, you have to be able to go home.  That being said, the current requirements, set by the US and applicable to US citizens for travel outside of the US, are:

By Air:  A Valid Passport

By Land:  A valid passport OR an offical birth certificate and a government issued photo id such as your drivers license.  Note that if you were not born in the US but are a citizen you need your naturalization ID.

By Sea:  Same as for land.

There are other forms of acceptable ID however they are restricted to certain points of entry and relate to frequent travellers more than the occasional visitor.

The requirement for a passport for all forms of travel is scheduled to come into effect after June 1, 2009 so you still have a year to worry about this.  In addition there is a Passport Card in the works which will allow you to travel to countries you currently do not require a passport to travel to presently.  There are also other forms of ID currently being looked at such as an enhanced drivers license (which contains citizenship data) which may also be acceptable at that time.

That being said if you have a passport bring it as that will simplify matters, if not, don't worry for another year.

there is a special passport that you can get to go to Canada - its just an ID card instead of a book.   You can use it as long as you don't FLY to Canada.   You can use it if you take a cruise ship to many Carribbean ports as well.

According to this site it's 2009. Then you'll need a passport or you can get an Enhanced ID, which I believe is cheaper. Your DMV will have information on how to get one.

nope you don't need it when traveling by land and / or sea, (until June 2009) make sure you have your birth certificate and driver's license....
