I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and me and a few friends want to take a trip to Georgia, which of course is in America.

We are driving, and I do not have a passport.

Do I need one?

Is there a way without a passport?

Is it possible to get my passport within a month?

Thanks

  1. It used to be that you didn't need a passport....but the laws have changed. You need to have a passport. I have attached the government link regarding this issue. I hope this helps.

  2. no, you don't need a passport if you are driving. you only need one if you are flying. you might need some other info like a birth certificate and proof of citizenship though. hope this helps.

****sorry. i was just informed that they were in the process of changing this law. you used to be able to but now you need one. good news though, i just got my passport and it took me less than a month. hurry up and get registered for one now though, because it could take longer.

  3. You don't need a passport when traveling by "LAND or SEA" (TILL JUNE 2009) You need a government issued photo ID such as a driver's license and birth certificate.

It takes 2 weeks to get a new passport if you apply in person. There are few other options like express or pick-up services, that will take less than 2 weeks but additional fees will apply.

  4. Charlie is right. It is so much better when they give you links that prove it like he did, right?

So here is another official website that supports his statements. This one is a link from the Canada Border Services Agency, and it tells you the rules for BOTH countries. I quote:

"As of June 1, 2009, Canadian and U.S. citizens will be required to present a valid passport .... when entering the United States at land and water ports of entry."

They mention that there may be an "other acceptable document" that they will allow you to use, but that is usually a special card like NEXUS, or some new card with security measures that they have been talking about introducing.

  5. Yes

    no

    no

  6. TeKe , Kelsey and Proud are woefully misinformed. Until June 2009 you DO NOT need a passport to enter the U.S. by car.

  7. NO! you do not YET need a passport to drive between Canada and the U.S.  you do need a photo I.D. and a proof of citizenship...EITHER a passport OR a birth certificate.  See site below...the site given by "PROUD" actually also syas you do NOT need a passport...gotta read it carefully.
