Do I need a passport to enter the Republic of Ireland?

You Sir are an idiot.  OF COURSE YOU DO.  Ireland is a country; its not part of the US of A.  If you are planning on swimming to Ireland, then no you don't need a passport.

Passport/Visa requirements are ALWAYS dependant on your nationality as well as your destination. Technically a UK citizen does not need a passport to travel to Ireland, but if you are flying the ID requirements are set by the airline, and some require a passport.

Officially yes but when I went they never asked to see it. That may well have changed now with all the extra security checks, I would get one definately.

Check with the airport, my aunt lives there but flys to Glasgow regularly and she doesn't have a passport, although she usually flys from Belfast as its cheaper than the republic

If ur coming from the UK they dont normally ask but from anywere else they do as they need to stamp it and all the rest!!

Just to let you know some pubs and clubs in Ireland wont accept driving licence as your ID as the Irish driving licence can easily be messed with so just to let ya know your better off having your passport with you for that or age card!!

Graham is right, only a UK citizen does not have to show a passport when entering the ROI, however I would advise you to have it, and check with your airline if your driving licence is enough

However, from next year EVERYONE, including holders of UK passports will need to show their passports ( to do with emigration control)

It depends on how you enter the country. If you arrive at Dublin airport, you have to show it. If you arrive by car ferry, you are usually asked for it.

If you arrive by train from Northern Ireland, you usually do *not* have to produce it but may be asked for identification.

I would advise you to go to or call the Irish embassy from the country that you were located. Have a pleasant trip - in advance.

Yes. It will not be stamped if you are from another EU country but they should ask to see it.

There is a common travel area between the UK and Ireland and technically you don't require a passport. However you will require photo id to fly so it is a lot easier if you bring your passport. Although you don't technically need it, the people doing the controls are getting more picky all the time. So, if you have a passport, just bring it along.

As a travel agent of 12 years the answer is YES. They are supposed to check your passport when leaving the uk and arriving into another country. You dont need one for Northern Ireland. Some people say that you dont need a passport if you travel by boat into rep ireland,this is not true either.

Take your passport, i cannot promise that they will ask to look at it as this country is more strict than our european friends.
