  1. you need picture id to get into ireland, so a driving licence or passport is needed.

  2. I'd say so.. you are crossing another countries border.

  3. Hello ,

This question is asked once a week in the travel/ Ireland section.

you need photo id (e.g. driving licence/passport) when travelling by  ferry between UK and ROI

You do not need ANY id if travelling by road between UK and ROI (driving licence required if driving though in ROI) as the border is open.

and you DO NEED a passport if flying between UK and ROI.

  4. I asked this question some time ago, and some of my answers said,

You don't need a passport if you have something with your photograph on, like a photocard driving license or ID Card.

    Hope this helps.

  5. no just a photo id.

  6. You just need ID for the ferry. Ireland was part of the UK only last century, and is still part of the British Isles. Also we are both in the EU so the issue of passports is not so important. You can cross from one EU country into another with no passport/ID at all if you are travelling by road. Have a read of the section on Political Co-operation within the Islands on the wikipedia page for the British Isles.

  7. No. A photographic ID is accepted for travel within the British Isles (Great Britain and Ireland). Exact list of what is accepted should be mentioned on the website of the ferry company, but usually, driving licence is among the accepted types of ID.

If you don't have photographic ID, do get a passport, because you do need some sort of identification.
