Yes you do need a passport.  Mostly you need it to reenter your country.  Get on this as soon as possible.  The government State Department (that handles passports) are swamped with requests and there is a long wait.  So take care of this immediately.  If you are in the US then go to the post office and they can take care of it.  Sometimes smaller offices can't and you have to go to a larger one.
