You definately need a passport. Regular processing is 4-6 weeks. We did it expedited for $60 extra and got it in 7 days.

Yo Do if you fly

You do NOT if you take a bus , drive or take a cruise. In that case photo I.D and your birth certificate will do until June 2009 and then you will need a passport to enter Mexico by all modes

Yes you will need a current passport.  This requirement was instated about a year ago.
