Do I need a passport to go to Mexico from California?

I am turning 18 on the 15th and want to drive out to Mexico. Will I need a passport? All I have is a birth certificate, State ID, and my social security card. Any legit answers would be appreciated!!

As of the first of the 2008 new year, ALL US citizens will need a passport to exit and re-enter the country by ANY means.

You don't need a passport to go by sea or drive right now. Only if you fly.

The rules will probably change next summer but right now, you can get by with the papers you have. Valid photo ID and birth certificate.

You only need a passport if you are flying into Mexico. If your planning on driving across the border a drivers license and birth certificate will be fine.

You should be able to get by with just your driver's license and proof of ownership of your car (or if you are renting a car, you'll need the documents to prove you are the person renting the car).

As some have said before me, if you fly, you need a passport now.  Come January 31, 2008, you will need a government issued I.D. (such as your driver's license) and your birth certificate.

You won't need a passport until sometime during the summer and they will be giving at least 60 days notice.  (Read the first link).

You will need Mexican car insurance whether you are driving your own vehicle or a rented one plus you will have to pay a bond (you'll get it back once you leave Mexico, provided you keep your receipt).  (Read the second and third links in regards to those matters).

The nice thing about the second link is that it provides you with all kinds of neat, and necesarry information about Mexico.  Things like Mexico laws, tourist visas, etc.

Yes starting january 1st 2008 you will need your passport to go into mexico walking driving, flight im not sure but i know you need it i go every year to see my in-laws, travel safely!

Yes you do need a passport.....But I wouldn't go unless you were flying into the mainland like Cancun or Cozumel.

You need a passport for air and sea vacations. As for driving they said passports will come into affect starting Jan 1 2008. But I also heard a rumor they are now trying to push back till July of 08. No matter what you should still get your passport.
