I'm traveling to San Felipe, Mexico this December and I keep getting different answers about the documents required in order to leave and return with no complications. I'm a US permanent resident but I'm not sure if that sufficient enough to get me back into the US. My other problem is that my birth certificate is missing. Would I have to contact the hospital Bangkok Thailand. Who should I go to for this???? Please help.

  1. Yes, the law has changed in the last year and you need a passport.

Yes you will need to get an original copy of your birth certificate from the hospital. You can see if they have a web site. I had to get a notarized letter to make a request for my birth certificate.

  2. Yes you will need your Passport.  Call the embassy in DC for Thailand, they maybe able to help you..

    good luck

to :Shawnty_from_.............. maybe because of your husband being mexican is why they give you problems.. making sure your not bringing others from  Mexico..  and i come and go into Mexico alot...  and Im brown skin  and they never give me a hard time...

  3. All US residents need a passport to travel to Mexico or Canada now. To get your birth cetificate try and find a web site for the hospital and it should give you more info or if that country has a hall of records you can try there.  And if you are still having trouble contact your embassy.

  4. im married to a mexican and go alot to see his family  ...the first time i used my fl license that was and prob because i have black hair and tan skin ...i live in florida....was not allowed to cross it was h**l trying to get home and  i was born in ohio get a passport  before you go anywhere to be safe

  5. Well, you have 2 problems, 1st, getting into Mexico, and 2nd getting back into the US. The second is the easy part, because you have a green card. the first may not be so easy since you're not an American citizen. I asume you are Thai, but even if not, legally, you're not yet an American and Mexico may have a visa requirement for you, so you need to check first. This information from the Country Information Sheet for Mexico on the State Department website at travel.state.gov should be useful:

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: For the latest entry requirements, contact the Embassy of Mexico website at http://www.embassyofmexico.org/eng/ or contact the Embassy of Mexico at 1911 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W., Washington, D.C. 20006, telephone (202) 736-1000, or any Mexican consulate in the United States for the most current information.

Land or sea travelers must have a valid U.S. passport (or U.S. citizenship documents such as a certified copy (not a simple photocopy or facsimile) of a U.S. birth certificate, a Naturalization Certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Citizenship are acceptable along with photo identification, such as a state or military issued ID).

U.S. legal permanent residents in possession of their I-551 Permanent Resident card may board flights to the U.S. from Mexico.

  6. Fairly soon it will be required to get back in.  And your green card too.  Your passport will not be US but that of your nation of origin,

  7. You said you are a permanent resident, which means you are not a US citizen. So how you going to get a US passport if you are not a citizen of the USA? Don't you need a birth-certificate or naturalization papers to get a US Passport? I suggest you get a passport from the country you are a citizen of.

Oh, and BTW, you do not need a passport to visit Mexico but it's a good idea to have one regardless of where you are going. You can get into Mexico if you are traveling by car with just a drivers license that has been obtained here in the USA. Your permanent residency card in conjunction should work just as well.

DO NOT leave the USA without your permanent residency card, Drivers license, etc.. some proof of residency, that would be a huge mistake. You should keep that stuff inside the passport from the country you are a citizen of.

  8. Alert! New passport requirements took effect January 23, 2007.

As of January 23, 2007, all persons -- including U.S. citizens -- traveling by air from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda are required to have a passport in order to enter the United States. A second phase of passport requirements will apply to land and sea travelers, beginning as early as January 2008 (with special relaxed rules for U.S. and Canadian children).
