Do I need a passport to go to Mexico now?

my friend got his like a month later

Of course!!! Remember that is an international flight so you need your passport obviously......and if you are a permanent resident you need to show your green card too!!

Its been very confusing, as of yesterday's paper in San Diego it said January 31, 08. Check the US government website.

If you are flying there ... yes, Mexican customs agents always check when you arrive at the airport, as well as US customs when you fly back.  However if you are driving there, you don't need it YET.  You only need your state ID when crossing into Mexico.  When you cross back to the US you will need your state ID as well as your birth certificate now (this started 1/1/08).  Starting either in June or July 1st (I'm not exactly sure which one, sorry) you WILL need a passport when coming back into the US, you will no longer be allowed to just claim US citizenship anymore.  I traveled to Mexico these past holidays so the border agent clarified it for me.

CORRECT info...You MUST have a passport to FLY to and from Mexico.  You do NOT yet need a passport to travel to and from Mexico by LAND or SEA.  That date has not yet been set, but wil be after next summer.  see site below and read top half of page carefully for correct info.  This site always has most updated info.  You not only need a passport to get back into the U.s. if you are flying ( like many people say), you will not be able to leave the U.S. on an international flight without a pasport.

I'm pretty sure you will need one to get into Mexico...and to get back in the US you will definitely need one.
