  1. yes

  2. Where are you from first off? When i lived in Michigan, i never used my passport. Not even after 911, i just showed my Michigan I.D and told them where i was going to in Canada when asked. Now if your not from the U.S then yes, you will need one to get in.

  3. It all depends on where you are from, if you are a US Citizen then the following answer will apply.

This is probably the question that creates the most confusion and generates the most number of incorrect answers of any current question.  The current rules relating to passports for travel between the US and Canada were set down by the US Department of Homeland Security and relate to travel into the US, not into Canada.  However similar rules are often enforced at Canadian Border Crossings for the simple reason that if you enter Canada you still have to be able to go back into the US.  This is especially true for US Citizens or others residing in the US.

The current regulations for travel into the US from Canada for all citizens, US and Canadian, are as follows:

    By Air:  A valid Passport

By Land:  A valid Passport, OR, a valid government issued ID (i.e. Driver's License) and an official birth certificate.  If you are 18 or younger then only a birth certificate is required.

    By Sea:  Same as Land.

If you are 18 or younger and travelling either alone or with one parent you will require a letter of authorization allowing the person/parent trasnporting you to bring you across the border.  It must be sigend by either both parents or the parent not accompanying you.

The best form of ID is a passport however and it is planned to make this the sole ID required for all forms of travel effective as of June, 2009 (by the US Government).  In addition there are other forms of ID in the works, proposed or being tested such as a "Passport Card" or enhanced Driver's Licenses that may be acceptable.

  4. first of all you have to post where are you staying rightnow for us to be able to answer your question.

  5. Yes you do. The law requiring a passport to enter Canada was passed not too long ago so now you need it to enter and exit Canada.

  6. yes now you do.

  7. Yes. If you plan on driving through the border, they no longer allow you to only show your driver's license. You must have your passport. Same goes with flying across the border too of course. In some states, you can use an enhanced driver's license.

  8. I am making it a personal mission to educate Americans (and Canadians too, on the current passport law.  The passport requirement is an American requirement.

Americans do not now nor will they in the future (unless the Canadian Government changes it's rules) require a passport to enter Canada. The passport issue is simply this. Everyone currently needs a passport to enter the USA if arriving by air from a foreign country. This applies to American citizens as well as all other nationalities. As of June 2009, anyone entering the USA via any mode of transportation will need a valid passport to get into the USA. This includes American citizens. If, after June 2009, you attempt to leave the USA via air and do not have a valid passport airlines will refuse to board you on the aircraft, so in essence you won't be able to leave your own country without a passport. After June 2009, you could still enter Canada by car without a passport, you just wouldn't be able to go back into the United States.

    Your rules, not ours.

  9. yes, anywhere outside the country you will need your passport

  10. Yes..I believe you can get through with an id and birth certificate. But they grill ya pretty good going through so I wouldn't chance it.

  11. On my experience, to go there, no, but to come back, yes if you were to fly. Just bring a passport just in case.

  12. No. (I'm assuming you're American).  The answers above are wrong.

I live in Windsor, Ontario and cross the border at least twice a month to Detroit, Michigan.  I also work at the casino in Windsor and know from our American patrons that they do not have to provide a passport at the border.

If you are travelling by LAND (not flying) at present you need government issued photo id (your driver's license) and your original birth certificate.  Not one or the other of these, but both.

The passport has been put off until at least June, 2009, as both countries are still toying with the idea of an enhanced driver's license instead.

lol...I answer this question all the time on this site, so you are not alone in your confusion.  But living in a border city, and crossing the border frequently makes me very up-to-date on this topic.
